Garowe (HOL) – Puntland regional state lawmakers have re-elected Said Abdullahi Deni as the President of the semi-autonomous territory in eastern Somalia following an election on Monday in Garowe town.

Sixty-six regional parliamentarians participated in the election, which took place after several days of political tensions in Puntland.

In the third round of the presidential election, Said Abdullahi Deni secured 45 votes, while his opponent, Guled Salah Barre, received 21 votes.

Deni faced prominent politicians who held various positions at the federal and regional levels, including former foreign ministers Ahmed Awad and Abshir Jama Haruse, and the former chairman of the Puntland election committee, Guled Salah Barre.

The Federal government of Somalia congratulated Said Deni on his re-election.

While Puntland has oil and gas reserves, there has been little commercial extraction so far because it has been dogged by violence. Officials in the region have previously clashed with the national government over laws governing the energy sector and electoral processes.
