Mogadishu (HOL) – The Somali cabinet council has confirmed that the death toll from the floods, caused by torrential El-Nino rains, has reached 96 as heavy rains persist in south-central Somalia.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre chaired the weekly cabinet meeting in Mogadishu on Thursday to discuss the intensified response to the El NiƱo-induced heavy rains and flash flooding in the country.

During the meeting, the Somali Disaster Management Agency briefed the ministers, stating that the floods and rains have affected nearly two million people, primarily in Hirshabelle, Southwest, and Jubbaland States.

The Council called on aid agencies and the Somali community to increase assistance to the most vulnerable people amid ongoing rains in several regions. Last week, the Prime Minister visited the Dolow district in the Gedo region, one of the districts in Jubbaland state severely affected by the flooding of the Jubba River.

The UN and its partners estimate that flooding and rains in the current deyr (October to December) rainy season could destroy 1.5 million hectares of farmland.
