Mogadishu (HOL) – Banadir Regional Police Command has refuted reports that the Somali government has banned people in Mogadishu from wearing face masks, turbans, hats, and face veils to enhance the security of the capital.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Monday, Banadir Regional Police Chief Mahdi Omar Mu’min accused what he called the enemy of spreading propaganda against the security agencies.

“There is no security decision to ban the religious symbols of the Somali community. It is propaganda of the enemy, and you should not be deceived. The security forces stand for the protection of religion,” said Commander Mahdi Omar Mu’min.

For the past few days, security forces on the streets have been asking passengers on public vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, to remove face masks, turbans, hats, and veils, sparking outrage among the society in the capital.

The police chief urged the people of Mogadishu to report any abuse related to the order that the security agencies did not issue.

Local media in Mogadishu also released videos of people complaining about the army’s measures.
