Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre announced on Saturday that the government will clear all roadblocks on the streets of Mogadishu at the beginning of the new year in 2024.

Prime Minister Barre made this announcement during a meeting organized by the Banadir regional administration to celebrate the progress and achievements in security in the capital city of Mogadishu.

The meeting was attended by government officials, military officers, leaders of the Banadir region, traditional elders, and women groups.

He emphasized that the government can only make progress if the security of the capital is fully ensured. Prime Minister Barre called on different sections of the Mogadishu community to play their part in eliminating al-Shabaab from Mogadishu and the country as a whole.

The Prime Minister commended the security agencies and the administration of the Banadir region for their efforts and cooperation, noting that the country is currently at a critical stage where the world will evaluate the steps taken by the federal government as the arms embargo has been lifted and debt relief has been achieved.

In previous years, security forces used large stones to prevent potential car bombs from infiltrating the highways. However, the remaining streets are now congested with traffic, leading to incidents where frustrated soldiers resort to live ammunition to clear jammed streets, resulting in casualties.
