Nairobi (HOL) – Somali lawmakers in the Kenyan Parliament, along with other prominent Somali politicians, strongly condemned the Ethiopian government’s port deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland following a meeting in Nairobi on Thursday.

Lawmaker Dr. Aden Keynan described the port agreement signed by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed with Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi as a direct violation of Somalia’s territorial integrity. The deal allows Ethiopia access to the Red Sea through the port of Berbera in Somaliland.

They demanded that the United Nations, the African Union, and IGAD take immediate action against the Ethiopian government if they do not withdraw from the agreement with the regional state.

“Abiy Ahmed is a young boy who does not consider what he is doing. He entered into an agreement with the regional administration, which is a clear violation. Knowing the historical wars between Somalia and Ethiopia, it is not worth it to create problems again,” said a member of the Kenyan Parliament.

The lawmakers pledged that they would discuss this matter with top officials of the Kenyan government, including the president of the country, William Ruto.

Somalia accused landlocked Ethiopia of attacking its sovereignty after Addis Ababa reached the agreement with Somaliland that gives long-sought access to the Red Sea.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell reinforced the bloc’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during a phone call on Thursday with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
