Kismayo (HOL) – The Somali Disaster Management Authority (SoDMA) has stepped in to assist those affected by the El Niño-induced floods in the Gedo Region, providing 3,000 tons of food and medicine to the Jubbaland State of Somalia.

Chairman Mohamud Maallim Abdulle, at a ceremony held at the SoDMA headquarters on Wednesday, officially delivered the aid to Gedo Regional Governor Abdullahi Shimbir and other officials from the Jubbaland government.

Governor Shimbir expressed appreciation for SoDMA’s generous contribution, highlighting its critical role in addressing the urgent need for food and medical aid among the population. He also pointed to ongoing collaborations with the Federal Government of Somalia and various partners to combat the flood’s repercussions and hasten the region’s recovery.

In addition to the food and medicine, SoDMA has provided a specially designed rescue boat to aid in evacuating those trapped by the floodwaters.

The El Niño phenomenon, known for its global impact on weather patterns, has triggered severe rainfall and flooding across Somalia. These extreme conditions have displaced hundreds of thousands of individuals and have caused significant destruction to crops and infrastructure, compounding the difficulties faced by the affected regions.
