Mogadishu (HOL) – Several governments have condemned the attack by al-Shabab on a military base in Mogadishu, which killed several Somali officials and five military trainers, four from the United Arab Emirates and one from Bahrain, on Saturday afternoon.

The United States Embassy in Mogadishu strongly condemned the cowardly attack and reaffirmed its unwavering support for Somali efforts to build peace. The embassy extended its deepest condolences to the loved ones of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack against UAE military trainers and Somali soldiers working to advance the nation’s stability.

Djibouti President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh also tweeted his government’s strong condemnation of Saturday’s attack on the military base in Mogadishu. The Pakistani foreign ministry released a statement strongly condemning the terrorist attack against the UAE military trainers and under-training Somali soldiers at the military base in Mogadishu. The statement offered its deepest condolences to the governments and people of the UAE and Bahrain, as well as to the families of the victims, and prayed for the swift recovery of all the injured.

The Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the attack, expressing prayers for the victims’ sacrifice towards peace in the region and offering solace to their families and the UAE government during this time of mourning.

The attack targeted troops at the General Gordon military base in Mogadishu, although details about the attack and casualties remain scarce. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud offered his condolences to the UAE.

The UAE’s Ministry of Defence announced the death of three of its troops and a Bahraini soldier in a “terrorist act,” adding only that two others were wounded.

One of the injured died on arrival in the UAE’s Abu Dhabi on Sunday, it said.
