Hargeisa (HOL) – Lawmakers from the Awdal and Salal regions of Somaliland have criticized the recent agreement with Ethiopia, labelling it as illegal and challenging its transparency and validity.

Senators and House of Representatives members have voiced their opposition,  questioning its structure and implications.

Representative Omar Noor, speaking for the dissenting lawmakers, stated, “We stand firmly against this agreement. Any deal undermining our constituents’ welfare and religious convictions is deemed illegitimate and harmful.”

The legislators have highlighted inconsistencies and unclear statements in the dialogue between Ethiopia and Somaliland, particularly criticizing Ethiopia’s assertion of gaining maritime access through the deal.

Furthermore, they have accused President Bihi’s government of neglecting necessary consultations with local lawmakers and the public, choosing instead to engage directly with Ethiopian representatives.

The lawmakers added that details from the agreement remain undisclosed to the public and jeopardize the territorial integrity of Somaliland.
