Beledweyne (HOL) – At least three children have died from
hunger after being stranded in floodwaters in Bundaweyn village in Beledweyne
town in the Hiiraan region.

The mayor of Beledweyne, Nadar Tabah Maalin, told the Somali
National News Agency on Sunday that the flood-affected people are facing a
severe humanitarian crisis, with several other children suffering from
malnutrition.

“There are still some people who have been stranded in other
villages in the town. All the food shops and health centers in this city have
been affected by the floods. There is a very serious humanitarian situation,”
he added.

The Somali National News Agency reported on Saturday that
the number of people killed by floods from heavy rains in Somalia has risen to
nearly 100. “Somalia’s flood death toll climbs to 96,” SONNA said in
a post on X, formerly Twitter, confirming the figure through Mahamuud Moallim,
the head of the country’s disaster management agency.

The flooding has been described as the worst in decades and
has displaced about 700,000 people, according to the United Nations.
