Nairobi (HOL) – Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, Somalia’s newly appointed Ambassador to Kenya, presented his credentials to Kenyan President William Ruto on Thursday. Abdulle, a former two-time presidential candidate in Somalia, has spent much of the past decade working in Kenya.

Abdulle’s immediate priority is to facilitate the reopening of the border between Somalia and Kenya, which has been closed since 2009. This task comes amid a period of heightened security assessments by Nairobi.

He replaces Mohamed Nur Tarzan, the former Mayor of Mogadishu, appointed ambassador in 2018 by former Somalia President Mohamed Farmaajo. Abdulle’s tenure follows a period of strained relations between the two nations, including the suspension of direct flights in 2019.

In Kenya, Abdulle’s counterpart will be Kiringo Kubai, a newly appointed envoy from Kenya to Somalia. Kubai, a former legislator from Igembe Central in Meru County, replaces Maj-Gen Thomas Chepkuto, appointed by Kenya’s former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Abdulle has also served as the head of the Centre for Research and Dialogue and was a member of the Council of Presidential Candidates, a coalition in Somalia’s presidential race last year.
