Garowe (HOL) – In the latest escalation of regional tensions, a conflict broke out early this morning between Somaliland and the SSC Khatumo State in the Yayle area of the Sool region. Both sides have reported casualties, and the situation remains fluid, with control of territory still in dispute.

Through its Minister of Information, Ali Mohamed Hassan Ali Marehaan, the Somaliland government accused SSC Khatumo intelligence officers of initiating the conflict. “This act of aggression was deliberately orchestrated to destabilize the Puntland region,” Marehaan stated, emphasizing the need for unity against these provocations. He added, “We must stand united in the face of such destabilizing actions that threaten the peace and security of our region.”

Contrastingly, SSC Khatumo leveled serious accusations against Somaliland. A spokesperson for SSC Khatumo reported, “Somaliland forces instigated this large-scale attack in the Sool region, disrupting the peace initiatives that have been making progress over the past days.” They also condemned the assault on the Yeyla district, which was “an area of peace and diplomacy just hours before the attack.”

The conflict disrupts a period of relative peace in the Sool region, a disputed area between Somaliland and Puntland. The sudden violence raises concerns about its impact on local communities and regional stability.

Reports on Wednesday indicate a fierce battle with an uncertain outcome, including both parties’ capture of prisoners and military equipment. The Somaliland government’s allegations of involvement by terrorist groups add complexity to the situation.

International observers and regional stakeholders are closely monitoring developments, urging restraint and a return to dialogue. Diplomatic efforts are reportedly underway by the United Nations and the African Union to de-escalate tensions.
