Beledweyne (HOL) – The first aid assistance for flood-affected people arrived in Beledweyne town on Tuesday after the Shabelle River burst its banks due to torrential El-Nino rains in the region.

The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) stated that it had dispatched a plane carrying seven tons of aid to Beledweyne. Additionally, three more planes carrying additional food supplies will be sent to the town in the coming hours.

The governor of the Hiiraan region, Abdullahi Ahmed Maalin Sufurow, who received the donation at Ugas Khalifa Airport, emphasized that one or two planes carrying food are insufficient to meet the needs of the numerous people affected by the floods and rains.

“I am grateful to SoDMA for responding to our call and bringing the aid. While we appreciate this initial assistance, we recognize that it alone cannot fully meet the needs of the displaced people. We will ensure that aid will be distributed to the most affected individuals,” said Governor Sufurow.

The death toll from the floods and rains in the Hiiraan region alone has risen to 12, with two people still missing, according to the governor.
