Garowe (HOL) – SSC-Khatumo traditional leaders have voiced optimism about finding a resolution in the ongoing Puntland election dispute. The SSC claims to have effectively maintained security in the state capital, Garowe, by separating government and opposition forces following previous armed confrontations.

During a press briefing in Garowe, SSC-Khatumo spokespeople sought to reassure the public that normalcy is being restored in the city. They confirmed that residents are returning and the reopening of previously closed schools. The group expressed hope for a peaceful solution to the current political disagreement.

Concurrently, the Puntland parliament convened on Sunday without plans to address the contentious amended electoral law after the last session ended in disarray. This decision was made in light of allegations by Puntland state MPs that Speaker Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril compromised the parliament’s independence to align with President Said Abdullahi Deni’s political interests. Legislators say Puntland’s parliament’s decision to postpone discussions on electoral issues aims to support ongoing peace efforts.

Last week, SSC elders arrived in Garowe to aid peace talks between President Deni and the armed opposition. Central to the dispute is the format of the upcoming January 2024 elections. President Deni’s preference for a direct, one-person, one-vote system is being challenged by those advocating for an indirect election method supported by traditional elders and opposition groups.
