Jigjiga (HOL) — Ethio Telecom, Ethiopia’s longstanding telecommunications leader, has officially launched 5G services in Jigjiga city, marking a significant leap in the nation’s digital infrastructure. Following the rollout in Addis Ababa and Adama, this development places Jigjiga among the first Ethiopian cities to access ultra-fast 5G connectivity.
The 5G service is initially available in key areas including Parliament Hall, Hodley (Palace and Airport Road), Sheik Abdusalam School, Old Taiwan, Regional Administration and Revenue Offices, and Ethio Telecom’s Regional office. Expansion plans include Jigjiga University, Jigjiga Sheik Hassen Yabare Referral Hospital, New Taiwan, Kebele 06 (Ahmed Gurey School), and Jelaba.
5G technology, offering speeds up to 10 Gbps and low latency of less than 1 ms, is expected to revolutionize sectors like healthcare, education, agriculture, and smart city development in Jigjiga. Ethio Telecom’s move is vital to Ethiopia’s broader aim to enhance socio-economic growth through advanced digital solutions.
The launch in Jigjiga comes amidst a dynamic period in Ethiopia’s telecommunications sector. Recent events, such as France’s Orange abrupt withdrawal from the bid to acquire a stake in Ethio Telecom, reflect ongoing challenges and liberalization efforts in the industry. Ethio Telecom, a major player in the “Big 5” state-owned corporations, continues to dominate the telecom landscape in Ethiopia, even as the market gradually opens to new entrants like Kenya’s Safaricom.
