Dubai (HOL) – The death toll from floods triggered by El Niño rains has reached 120, with over one million people displaced, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced on Friday during his address at the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).

President Mohamud stressed the need for urgent responses as devastating floods impacted 2.4 million people in the country. Advocating for equitable climate finance, damage funds, and global unity, he emphasized that these are crucial in combating the current reality.

President Mohamud underscored that climate change is a reality in Somalia, not a distant threat. “We are currently grappling with a humanitarian crisis caused by severe floods affecting millions. This cycle of climate catastrophes demands immediate global action.”

“Somalia is at the forefront of the countries directly affected by the issue of climate change, and the example of our people dealing with the floods caused by the El-Nino storm is evident in those who have already overcome the drought that hit the country.”

He pointed out that Somalia’s recent floods and the narrowly avoided famine reflect the struggles of many developing countries. “Our goal is to reduce emissions by 30% by 2030, advocating for fair climate finance and implementing loss and damage funds. Together, we can create a greener, fairer future,” he added.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud criticized the international process to prevent the impact of climate change, highlighting the limited involvement of African countries in the plan to address the problem. He called on industrialized countries to fulfill their responsibility to ensure a world suitable for life.

The Somalia Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) reported that torrential rains have caused landslides and flash floods in other parts of Somalia, destroying crops and livestock.
