Mogadishu (HOL) – A string of mine blasts in Mogadishu’s business sectors on Sunday has heightened concerns among locals and merchants. The first explosions occurred on Route 30 (Jidka 30-ka), near Laba Dhagax, targeting two businesses. Subsequently, another blast rocked the Bakahara market.

Local media, citing eyewitness accounts, report fatalities and property damage. Notably, two women walking in the Bakaraha market’s Cirtoogtaha area were killed in one of the explosions.

Authorities suggest the blasts, aimed at commercial zones, are linked to the presence of CCTV cameras. These security measures, requested by the business community and installed by Somali security agencies, are opposed by Al-Shabaab. The group has warned shop owners against cooperating with government security forces.

Somalia’s intelligence chief, Mahad Mohamed Salad, visited Bakara Market on Thursday to alleviate the concerns of traders following threats from Al-Shabaab. The visit comes in the wake of an attack on an auto parts business the previous day, for which authorities have held the militant group responsible.
