Mogadishu (HOL) – At least 80 al-Shabab militants were killed in military operations in central Somalia over the last 24 hours, according to Brigadier General Dayah Abdi Abdulle, the country’s land forces commander on Tuesday.

The military operations occurred in Aad and Barag Sheikh Ismail under the Harardhere district in the Mudug region. The Somali National Army, supported by Galmudug forces and local troops, liberated several villages in the Mudug region.

The commander emphasized that these operations were part of the ongoing efforts in the central province of Mudug in Hirshabelle state, as well as in the southern state of Jubaland.

Somalia has been plagued by insecurity for years, with the main threats emanating from al-Shabaab and the Daesh/ISIS terror groups.

Since 2007, the al-Shabab terror group has been fighting the Somali government and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), a multidimensional mission authorized by the African Union and mandated by the United Nations Security Council.
