Garowe (HOL) – Puntland’s presidential candidates have vehemently opposed the list of new parliament members announced by the Electoral Dispute Resolution and Vetting Committee.

In a joint statement released Monday, the candidates claimed that the released list was fabricated, alleging it was taken directly from President Deni’s influence. They reiterated their warning to the incumbent President, asserting that his leadership could lead Puntland into destruction and political instability. They emphasized that he would take responsibility for any political discord from the regional election.

The candidates’ disapproval emerged hours after the Chairman of the Electoral Dispute Resolution and Vetting Committee, Isak Ahmed Hassan, objected to the announcement of Parliament members, claiming it was unlawful and lacked his signature of approval.

Meanwhile, military forces loyal to the candidates have cordoned off parts of Garowe city, anticipating potential clashes between rival forces within the regional security forces. Additionally, forces loyal to the candidates have withdrawn from the frontlines in the Sool region and are en route to Garowe, the administrative capital of Puntland.

The announcement of the new Puntland Parliament by the Electoral Dispute Resolution and Vetting Committee on Monday morning faced opposition from various political stakeholders. Notably, the list included 17 members from the SSC Khatumo, despite the earlier declaration by the Supreme Council of SSC Khaatumo that the newly formed SSC Khaatumo administration would no longer be part of the semi-autonomous northern Somali state of Puntland.
