Dublin (HOL) – In a sombre beginning to the new year, the community of Donegal is mourning the loss of Layla Hussein Ali, a 22-year-old Somali national, following a tragic road accident. Ms. Ali, a resident of Ireland since March 2023, met a tragic end on the N56 road near Illistrin at around 7 p.m. on Friday, marking the first road fatality in Donegal in 2024.
The incident has not only left Ms. Ali’s family in profound grief, leading her relatives to travel from the UK to Letterkenny for support from a Garda family liaison officer but also cast a sombre shadow over the county. The Gardaí’s comprehensive investigation, which included a temporary closure of the N56 road for detailed examination, highlights the seriousness of the situation.
No other injuries have been reported.
The local community and authorities are jointly appealing to the public for assistance in the investigation. The Gardaí are particularly interested in any CCTV or dashcam footage from the Illistrin area between 6:00 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. on the day of the incident, urging nearby residents and businesses to come forward with any potentially crucial evidence.
Layla’s untimely passing has reignited discussions on pedestrian safety. Local officials, deeply affected by the accident, are advocating for legislative changes, including mandatory high-visibility clothing for pedestrians. This proposal follows a distressing trend in pedestrian fatalities in Ireland, with 44 recorded in 2023.
