Mogadishu (HOL) – A recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Ethiopia and Somaliland has catalyzed a forceful response from Somali leaders, underscoring a rare show of solidarity among the Somali elite. This coalition, spanning a diverse array of political figures, has united in their condemnation of the deal, seeing it as a threat to Somalia’s territorial sovereignty.
The MOU, allowing Ethiopia access to a segment of Somaliland’s coastline in exchange for shares in Ethiopian Airlines and potential acknowledgment of Somaliland’s independence, has stirred significant dissent. This arrangement directly challenges Somalia’s national boundaries and has become a focal point of regional geopolitical tensions.
The coalition’s statement underscores the deal is “a clear breach of the charters of the UN, AU, IGAD, and international law,” emphasizing the collective resolve to uphold Somalia’s territorial integrity.
Signatories of this statement include notable figures like Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former President, as well as former Prime Ministers Hassan Ali Khaire and Abdiweli Mohamed Ali. Their collective voice represents a potent political force in Somalia, spanning various administrations and political spectrums.
Ethiopia, under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and facing its own internal challenges, sees the MOU as a strategic initiative to secure sea access. However, this move has attracted criticism for potentially heightening regional instability.
In contrast, Somaliland, aspiring for international recognition since its 1991 declaration of independence from Somalia, perceives the deal as a step towards realizing its ambitions for statehood. Yet, this agreement has not been uniformly welcomed within Somaliland, evidenced by internal protests and the resignation of key officials like the defence minister.
The joint statement issued by Somali leaders is emphatic in its tone and content. It states, “We firmly stand by the Somali government in its endeavours to safeguard the nation and protect its sovereignty from any foreign entity.” This statement reflects a deep-seated concern about external influence in Somali affairs and a commitment to national unity.
