Kismayo (HOL) – Somali Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre, accompanied by Ambassadors from Turkey and China, along with representatives from the United Nations Office, visited the outskirts of Kismayo on Tuesday to evaluate the situation of the flood-affected people.
The Prime Minister highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that thousands of families remain stranded in the flooding from the Jubba River in the Gedo region.
Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre underscored that the magnitude of the people’s suffering surpasses local capacities. He called on the international community to be crucial in responding to emergencies and facilitating rescue operations. Following the visit, the Prime Minister convened a meeting with the ambassadors and aid agencies to discuss a coordinated response to the humanitarian crises in Jubbaland, with a particular focus on the Gedo region.
Jubbaland’s Gedo region is among the areas severely affected by the floods caused by El-Nino rains, where the Jubba River flooding has killed several people.
The Somali National News Agency reported on Saturday that the number of people killed by floods from heavy rains in Somalia has risen to nearly 100. “Somalia’s flood death toll climbs to 96,” SONNA said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, confirming the figure through Mahamuud Moallim, the head of the country’s disaster management agency.
