UN Secretary-General António Guterres says he “deeply regrets” the resumption in fighting in Gaza.

In a statement on social media, he says: “I still hope that it will be possible to renew the pause that was established.

“The return to hostilities only shows how important it is to have a true humanitarian ceasefire.”

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 14,800 people have been killed, including about 6,000 children, since Israel began its campaign against Hamas in Gaza.

It began bombing the territory after Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and kidnapping about 240 others. Over the last week, more than 100 of those hostageswere released in exchange for the freeing of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.
