Garissa (HOL) – Leaders of Garissa County in Kenya have expressed concerns over the rising use and sale of drugs, attributing it to increased insecurity in the county, especially among young people.

Speaking on Tuesday, Garissa Township lawmaker and Defense Minister Aden Duale emphasized that there should be no tolerance for drug use and disorderly behavior in the town. He highlighted that youth involved in drug abuse pose a threat to the town’s security.

“When young people use drugs, it leads to incidents like rape. As the Minister of Security, I urge parents to intervene if their children are engaging in drug use or any behavior contrary to Islam. Children should be raised to do good,” he stated.

Garissa Township M, Dekow M Barro, called for a united effort to combat drugs and alcohol, acknowledging the positive role of religious leaders but stressing the need for their reinforcement.

“We need to decide if we are Somalis. Our young people are not be confined to working in hotels and houses. We must address this issue, or else our city will change,” he remarked.

He also noted the shift in societal norms, mentioning the prevalence of drug use, including Shisha smoking, among Somalis, which was previously uncommon.

Meanwhile, Kenyan security forces arrested three people with 353 stones of bhang (cannabis) in Mororo, Tana River County, estimated to have a street value of Sh75,000. The arrests were made as part of an intensified crackdown on narcotics by Nacada and the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.

In a separate operation on Monday night, 11 people operating unregistered chemists were arrested. Abdinasir Ahmed, an official from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, stated that the operation targeted people illegally selling controlled drugs.
